Abney Park Terrace

Abney Park Terrace is a mixed-use development in Hackney opposite the listed entrance to the famous Abney Park cemetery. EUA worked closely with a local developer to create a 5-storey corner development in a predominantly 3 storey context which has subsequently become a landmark in Stoke Newington.

EUA persuaded the London Borough of Hackney Planning Department to allow a 5 storey building by virtue of its high quality design and landmark status on a prominent corner. The development incorporates a basement car-park providing 35 car spaces, shops, office space and 35 flats.

Despite the project being speculative EUA persuaded the developer to use high quality materials and bold detailing including fine finished in-situ concrete columns and mouldings, architectural metalwork on the principle facade and an extensive use of balconies and roof modelling to accentuate the corner.

It is an early example of PWA's interest in tight urban infill sites and mixed use development to achieve urban regeneration.

PWA designed and detailed the scheme and was in the process of supervising works on site at first floor level when the insolvency of the developer/contractor caused the part complete site to be sold on at auction. The development was later completed without the further involvement of PWA.
