A subterranean 3-bedroom house in Hampstead, north London. Located on the site of an existing backlands garage, amongst a stepped garden landscape, the proposal embraces this sensitive context, subtly inhabiting the ground. In contrast to the modest exterior, the inside of the building is dramatic and generous in scale, with a considered use of and response to space and light. A sunken courtyard and double height glazing allows light to penetrate the depths of building. A green roof and a strong emphasis on landscaping seek to enhance/ restore the character of the garden context. This forms part of the overall sustainability agenda. The building enjoys its hiddenness and the generated sense of surprise and discovery. The design explores the nature of dwelling. |
