Rivaz Place, London

The brief from Providence Row Housing Association was to produce a small block of 15 move-on flats for clients in transition between temporary overnight shelters and permanent social housing in the middle of a large housing estate in Hackney, London.

A 'defensible space' solution was developed by designing a series of ply privacy screens attached to a galvanised steel frame and walkway structure spanning the full building height, screening the public areas and flat entrances from the potentially hostile gaze of estate residents. The flats were located in a restrained red brick 'box' with a simple mono-pitched metal clad roof.

Flats were tightly planned single bed units of 35 m sq with a bold and optimistic interior colour scheme.

The scheme was completed and occupied in 1999.
